As we know that most of the so called 'monster fish' live in dark world and lighting is not already important factor when planning a tank set-up, correct ?

Now, I actually in mid of planning a 7 feet tank, thinking to use 150 Watt Metal halide so some part of the tank will be very bright and others part can be quite dark.

Any comments/inputs would be appreciated..... :clap

I don't think that light bothers most fish , in fact most of them they get used to it.

If you keep wild fish they would be the ones most affected by the bright lights but fish that have lived in aquariums all their lives accept lights as what happens and it means someone might be comming to feed them.

This is a general answer and we really need to know the size of the tank you plan to use it on (how tall) and what fish you plan to keep in it

Hi, thanks for the advice.
The tank size probably will be 7ft x 2.5ft (W) x 2.0ft (H), plan to keep silver arowana, black arowana, silver dollars, red hook, and various royal pleco fishes.

Personally I would not do it, as the Arowana will be swimming right up there with the lights. But as Repair said, i guess they could get used to it in the long run...

I agree that the arowana may not like that much light. Do you already have the light? If you do you could always try it and see how it reacts.

Thanks for comment.
Actually, I'm still in the planning stage to buy or not to buy this light : Arcadia 3 Series Mini pendants (Metal halide 150W), size only 45cm x 25cm. Please see product link: http://www.arcadia-uk.info/product.php?psub=0&pid=5&mid=10&lan=en&id=4

If I hang this light in the middle of 7 feet tank, it would create a special effect for the monster tank as some part of tank will be dark and some part will be brightly light-up some by metal halide. ;)

the light should be atleast 12-18" above the tank but i would use it because it causes a ripple effect on the water like sunlight and give a good show just get a bulb for freshwater no need for a blue bulb and hasn't anyone heard that fish get suntans and show better color thats why ciclids raised up outside in tubs have better color than those raised under flourescents

Aren't arowanas already used to having light shine right on top of them?? They are surface swimmers i believe. In the wild i'm sure they do swim to the surface and hunt for food while having sunlight shine on them.
