I have a 400w metal halide fixture on a 75 gallon tank that's 21" deep. How high should the fixture be above the tank? I have heard they produce alot of heat, so i'm trying to keep as much heat away from tank.

Depends if you are trying to keep corals or not. Its all about PAR reading. Are you trying to keep coral?

Yes I am trying to keep corals. O have mushroom and some palys right now that are under a 108w t-5 light. Looking to add an anenome, or something for a maroon clown to host in . I can look into other corals since i'll be having a lot more light for certain corals.

400 W is overkill IMO. Not only is it gonna heat up your water your electric bill is going to go through the roof. You'll save a lot of money getting LEDs or just getting a 250W. What were you planning on keeping?

It was a fixture I git of cl for $80. I may just run the 250w only. wasn't sure if I should run both or just one. I always seen that some corals need more light. I only had fowlr tanks with mushrooms and a kenya tree. It's under t-5 but only 108w. I'll see in the future about an led fixture. I may have to catch another deal on cl.

If you're just gonna have mushrooms and the kenya tree then I'd def get another fixture. You got the fixture for cheap at $80 but your electricity bills will negate that after a few months
