so in many chain pet stores if you buy stem plants like anacharis, they will give you 5 or 6 stems all held together by a metal clasp thing in order to weight the plants down. My question is can you put and keep these metal clasps around the plants when you put the plants into your home aquarium? Is there any potential for them causing any harm?

PS- sorry, but i don't know what kind of metal they're made from

That's a good queston I've bought plants before that had the metal band on them but I've always took them off cause I've always seperated them. I could see however if you wanted to keep them all together the metal clamp would come in handy. Only problems I could see is the metal band rusting or hurting the plants as they grew bigger. I'm curious to see what others think about this.

+1

They are made from lead. As many people know lead causes detrimental effect to people like children and pregnant women. As far as it being harmful to fish I do not know. I do know that for many years I have used lead weights for fishing and have used these lead weights in my tanks.

lead is fine, lead is only detrimental if it is absorbed through your skin/inhaled/ or swallowed. thats why it was dangerous back in the 80's with all the lead paint, people would sand/scrap it off, or simply it would chip off and enter the body though your mouth or nose. which caused lead poisoning. as for the weights unless you are melting them down or grinding them to a fine powder they are as harmful as a mercury thermometer.
