Hi, could anyone advise me what are the differences between the Bright blue and Cobalt forms of this fish? The internet says something different every time. Which form is darker? I would like to get this fish but I don't know which form to choose.
Bright blue and cobalt are both just names given by vendors to sell them better.
In most cases they refer to M. callainos with all blue males and females, which are made by selection and selective breeding.
In the lake you find blue, white and MC males, bluish, white, grey, OB and O females. Depending on the location they show more or less blue, sometimes you even find white, light blue and darker blue within the same local population.
Here for example you can see some of the different morphes in the Nkata bay population
Also I would probably skip those vendors selling them as Cobalt or Bright Blue since they are using common names and not scientific names...hybrid risk. Go for fish labeled Metriaclima callainos Nkhata Bay.
Great info, great fish just make sure you get your fish from a reputable trusted source, as for fish labeled “nhkata bay” I bought fish labeled that that turned out to be some weird hybrids, the real callainos are out there and not that hard to get..
