sorry for all the posts but im just getting everything ready for when i start stocking my tank. want to be prepared. Does anyone feed metro flakes as a preventative whenever they get a new fish? or as a preventative every so many weeks? Does the metro in the food hurt your beneficial bacteria? Just wondering if it is something i should buy..... Does flake food have a long shelf life?

As was discovered with humans and antibiotics...preventative meds are not a good idea. And metronidazole is expensive. I only use met when the appropriate illness has been diagnosed, not even when new, wild-caught fish are in quarantine. It has a 2-year shelf life, but I only like to keep food for 6 months.

You can get metronidazole via overnight delivery. It does not hurt beneficial bacteria. My fish can easily go 2 years without getting sick, so I order when needed.

You may never need it unless you are stocking tropheus or demasoni (species susceptible to bloat).
