Hello all,

Sadly, I have to treat my 220g planted because I've got some kind of fungus-like fish disease I can't seem to get rid of by treating individual fish in quarantine. Some of the plants are very well rooted into the substrate and there are a few fish that would be possibly bullied to death/injury if they didn't have plants to hide in, so removing the plants temporarily is not much of an option. Also, I've no idea where I'd put them.

So the question is, what would putting Metronidazole into my planted tank do? Would that just nuke the helpful plant bacteria and kill all my plants? I have the little SeaChem powder tube of the stuff and am just adding it to water rather than food. I've sincerely tried googling this and haven't gotten a real answer.

Thanks so much!

I'm not sure if it is safe for all plants but i have used it before without any problems with the plants that were in the tank at the time.

The tank has mostly amazon swords with some java fern, crypt spiralis, and a few small banana plants. The only really expensive ones I care about are the swords, and they're the ones that provide hiding space for my eels.

Mainly I guess I want to know if it will destroy nitrifying bacteria.

It should be safe for short term application its a antibiotic but long term exposure might effect the plants, it would however also be bad for your fish long term. I think your fine.
