Sorry, I don't have anything on them. They are the most well known pleco that I have never seen one in person. I've seen tons of Zebras and quite a few blue eyes but never a red/orange cheek.
That is the one thing I have found on them is that they are ray safeLooks awesome, I'd probably lose sleep over leaving it with rays though.
Thanks Kolt! I am glad you mentioned the activity level.. because he has been all over the tank and I was worried he was not settling in.. as normally a pleco would be hiding in a new tank. They're fairly rare in the trade only sometimes being available, though they've been showing up more often recently. I had one comm'ed with a Watermelon Royal and Pinecone Pleco.
From what I read they're omnivores but IME mine ignored cucumber and other fresh veggies and seemed to prefer meat based pellets and shrimp. Whether that's common or not or if it was just my individual I can't say for sure. Also of consideration is my 95 was a juvie only being around 5-6 inches so I'm not sure if that made a difference on his/her diet preference at the time.
I had driftwood in the set up for the Royal which the 95 ignored so I don't think it's necessary for them. IME one of the best things about these guys is how active they can be. Mine regularly patrolled the tank and wasn't one for hiding making them a joy to watch.
