lah lah land.
Hello. I was wondering if there were any other fish keepers that travel for work. I'm away about two weeks out of every month, and I'm always worried. I've had to talk my wife through water testing, medicating, and water changes over the phone before. She's never very happy to deal with it.

i travel occassionally, even some international travel, nothing longer than 2 weeks though. i showed my gf how to feed my fish and keep the sump full of water. other than that, nothing else for her to do. my tanks can go 2 weeks w/o a water change

Do you have her feed them the same amount you normally do?
yeah, its easy for me since i give my cichla two whole tilapia fillets every night, cut into smaller pieces. so she cant really overfeed :)

if using something like pellets, etc., just measure out the amount you normally feed in a small cup to make it easy. its a good way for your significant other to get involved and start liking the hobby!

I'm aircrew on KC-130's in the Marine Corp. and I'm gone 2-3 weeks out of the month. I have my lights on timers. My 55 gallon South American community tank has an automatic feeder with flakes, shrimp, and pellets in it. However my 125 tank is up to my wife, bless her heart. She drops frozen foods in there twice a day once in morning and once at night before lights go out. As far as water changes go, they wait until I get home. I always do water changes the night before I leave and the day I get back. Sometimes when I'm gone for months at a time my wife is capable of doing them, but it is my hobby and I don't like to put that on her. Plus I over filter as much as I can... I also underfeed, less waist. With out my wife though I'd say it would be about impossible.

I had a breakout of angel fish disease one time when I was gone for a month and I talked my wife through the whole thing, she even set up a quarantine tank on her own.

And jcardona1 is right it is a great way to get you significant other in the hobby. My wife picked out everything in our 125 gallon. She said she wanted an Arowana so we got it, and she just ask's me what will be compatible with her other fish, its great. So MFKing is possible with travel. Wouldn't recommend it though if someone isn't around for emergencies etc...

Ya, he is about 6 inches. Great looking guy

Just realized it wasn't on my signature... Fixed

here is a vid of my tank, all the fish are still babies but can't wait till they grow in.

Nice tank. What are you moving up to? You do realize your seriously have like 6 months, if that, before that silver aro is too big???? Most hit 2ft from fry-size (yours is well started) in there first year, after 2ft they slow down drasticly.

Its kind of the aro broken-record . . . and many others will attest . . .to the 300gal. + baby silver aro + 8-9 months = catastrophe. I had one outgrow a 180 in a minute lol.

I'm not hating just making sure your aware of the time crunch you've got going on.
