I soon plan to upgrade my lighting from plain 'ol florescent to a MH/Actinic combo. The aquarium as it is now has a glass cover over it. Should I remove this when I get the MH lighting or leave it on?

I would remove it personally. Most people remove it, but some keep it on.

A few problems with keeping it on....

1. The salt splashes on the glass inhibit light penetration. The glass itself does the same.
2. The heat from the lights will be trapped in the tank and make it very warm. You will then need a chiller or other form of cooling for your tank water.

When I ran MH for one of my planted tanks, I did not use glass, it gets way too hot, that being said, evap will accelerate big time with no glass. Just make sure unit has enough space as not to get splashed. Big problems if you get water on a hot MH bulb.

You shouldn't have problems getting water on most metal halide bulbs because they should have a UV filtering splash guard.

So really there already will be glass between the bulb and the tank.

I have to agree evaporation wise though, you will need to do daily topoffs.
