I just picked up a group of 10 1" fry from these parents:

I've never kept this species [hybrid?] before but have always wanted to, most of the ones I have seen for sale here are a washed out orange colour, but now I've managed to find some from good looking parents! I understand they can go thru several changes as they grow and they "peel"? At what size can I expect the changes to take place?

Obviously I don't want to keep all ten (really just want one big male, or maybe a pair), but don't want to get rid of the rest before seeing their true potential. They're currently in an 80g, so should put on a fair bit of growth quickly. I can move them to a 160g if/when needed, but I had planned on keeping the male/pair in the 80g (48x20x20").

With 10 to pick from you should find yourself with a great looking fish. I'm tempted to tell you to split them or keep them in a bigger tank but crowding them will be the best thing for them when they start to get rowdy.

The parents look great. You'll probably see a bit of color at around 3cm. how big are they now?

I dont think you have red devil fry if those are the parents. I have never seen a devil with a hump. looks more like a midas pair in my opinion. The parents look good tho.

That's why the title says. "Mi-Devil".
Male is a Midas(Mi) Female is a RD(Devil).
Mi-Devil = Midas + RD hybrid.
:D
I've seen a few RD's with a lil kok, not as big as some Midas get but a lil bump @ most.

They're about an inch, or slightly smaller. The tank the breeder had them in was pretty bare and crowded and not ideal, so I'm hoping they'll colour up a bit more now in my tank.

Thanks for the link, and you're right, I said "mi-devil" because I can't sure of the lineage so there's a good chance they've got a bit of both in them...

IMO the male is a Midas & the female looks like an RD.
My pair is the opposite.
Female Midas, Male RD. :D

Bumping this up, here's a few pics of the fry. They've had a growth spurt in the two weeks since I've been back from holiday and they're getting fed twice daily now not once every five days! Most of them have peeled completely from their juvi colours, but there are a couple that haven't. Now its just a matter of waiting to see when and which ones start getting the mottled red/white look, any guess at what size this is likely to happen? Given the colouration of both parents, will all the young do it eventually, or are some likely to stay yellow?
