I just did an update. All my pics disappeared and everything off my desktop as well. This happened about two years ago from what I recall. Luckily I did a restore and got it all back. Funny I can't find a way to get in touch with MS to tell them how great that is. I now vow to never update again. Whats the worst that can happen? My computer stays the way I like it?

Without Windows Update newer software may not be compatible with it. Also most of the time they are security fixes so without those you run the risk of being vulnerable to viruses/spyware/malware. I have never seen this happen and I always run the updates as soon as I get them.

sp1 update includes something which isn't compatible with my system (original update came out about 5 months ago)

However,
Storing anything on your desktop is generally a bad idea, you should have things organized in folders you have made on your C:\ drive

Such as C:\sofakingleet\photos

there are many reasons to this, organization, easy to backup, virus' dont know where to look for your legal documents and pictures of your kids, etc.

Microsoft does millions of updates every first tuesday of the month, with little or no issues.

Typically if there IS an issue its hardware related, and that you have to blame on where you bought your computer and for them using cheap hardware. (I assume my issue is with my RAM controller on my MotherBoard)

I kind of agree with this as when my Win ME crashed last year. When I got it back up and running. I lost everything on desktop.

i might note, you MIGHT be able to find the files in

c:/.WINDOWS/user/%username%/desktop/

.windows, aposed to windows.

You might need to enable viewing hidden files to see it. Google if you really care.
