ok...i couldn't help myself but i recently obtained a gorgeous 14" midas cichlid. i was at a nearby fish store..... while i was there i saw something really sad.......two large midas cichlids in what was only a 20 gallon tank....they both had finrot, and a horrible case of ich.......out of pity i took one home to nurse it back to health......soon i will place it in my 5,000 gallon pond for the summer....i live in houston so the temp should be ok. it just makes me mad that people could do that to such gorgeous creatures. any suggestions of how to help him back to health would be greatly appreciated.

Pick something up to treat the finrot (Mardel makes a product that works great on it, I just can't remember which one it is...Maroxy or Maracide or something). Add some salt and turn up the heat to deal with the ich, and I'd throw in some Melafix too to help things along (awesome stuff). Hopefully you'll be able to get him on the road to a full recovery, good on you for trying and giving him another chance :)

The sad thing about lfs is they are putting big fish in a rediculous small tank, bec. they know a lot of there customers will feel pity for the fish and end up buying it.
I just recently saw a 2 feet jardini arowana in a 30gallon tank. The more people buy this fish out for pity, the more these lfs will keep them in small tank.
I would never buy a fish, out for pity.

Well, probably the stores just took in fish that grew out of customers' tanks. Are the stores really at fault? What are they supposed to with the overgrown fish? Euthanize them?

I've always used coppersafe to speed up the process of disposing of ich. And extra water changes, clean water will help. If you do one a week, try doing two a week for the next week or two. Of course, don't bother with coppersafe if the tank contains invertebrates or scaleless fish too.

Next time ask the owner about the Midas situation....If you ever see 2 adult midas in a 20 in my store, there would be only one reason....Reason for such an extreme situation is only due to the treatment of a disease....Period, nothing else....

Funny thing, I got my Midas Cichlid the same way.. though somewhat different. It was stuffed in a aprox. 30 liter (about 9 gallons) fish tank. The owner of the fishstore had a shortage of space and just wanted to get rid of the fish. But now is has plenty of space - for a while at least - until I have to get him a bigger fisk tank. Mine is only 50 gallons. The Midas is 5-6 inches...

Good luck with threating the fish
