Once upon a time (about 1 yr ago) I traded a male Midas to my lfs, I just didn't have the space, my hybrid texas were taking off and I had to make room quickly...fast forward to just a few weeks ago. I'd went in looking for something I could trade in my (male con, female parrot) current fish for...I just wasn't happy with them. I saw a very familiar looking Midas that had been traded in a few weeks before..all Midas look the same pretty much, but this one seemed very familiar. I immediately worked out an exchange with the store owner. By looking at old pics I positively identified him by the curling tip on the right ventral and ever so slightly asymmetrical mouth...it was indeed the same Midas. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised, I come from a small town, where else would the other owners have brought him when they grew tired of him? I also bought him a female con as a mate but he wasn't interested in her at all...not sure what I want to do with this guy other than just enjoy him & give him a home, it'd be neat to find him a mate, but obviously it would have to be something of appropriate size and attitude.

current pics, it needs gravel and perhaps a few more inches of water, total gallonage is around 30...I'm afraid to fill it too much further as my floors are still unsound, they should be fixed soon & the tank will be filled to it's full 60gal capacity.

Currently 8-9 inches long, not sure how much bigger he'll get...he was 7-8 inches a year ago when I traded him, an inch in one year isn't that much.

Thats an amazing story!

take it even further, a large aggressive fish like him is twice as likely to be traded back to the petshop...and as stated previously theres only one petshop for miles, where else would they take it? Bearing all that in mind it becomes merely sorta neat, rather than truly amazing.

The odds may have been in favor of it happening, but I tell you, it still rocked my socks. I loved that fish and really didn't want to part with him in the first place, to have him back means the world to me. :)

I guesstimate his age at 2-3 yrs, his condtion is good overall, although I fear he may be stunted to some extent. That means if he's well cared for, he's got quite a few years left in him. I may try finding him a hybrid mate, a killin or kkp. If he doesn't respond well to that I may try a medium cat of some kind, & possibly a few silver dollars or larger tetras...just a very few tankmates either way. Think I'd prefer to find him a suitable mate, even if I have to grow her out for a while.
The only place I know of that has them only has 2 inch killins available right now...but they also have 3-4 inch kkp...but kkp have less Amphilophus blood, while killins have a ton of amp blood, which is far more desirable for producing fertile male fry... If he was bred to a scarlet eyed killin female, the resulting male fry would almost certainly be fertile. And 50% or more of that spawn would be faders. hmmm
