Several months ago I picked up a 2-3 inch Midas who kept killing his tankmates at my work. He is an incredible fish who I have come to absolutely love. To get his growth going fast in the beginning I was instructed to feed beef heart every few days, to supplement a normal diet of larger pelleted food by Hikari. Naturally being pumped full of all that fat and protein, he has grown pretty rapidly and is up to around 6-7 inches now.
My question is this: Is it safe to assume that he will not be able to process the fat and protein content in that food, as he grows older and his growth slows (talking a fair way into the future, obviously)? Or will he still be able to make use of those extra calories? If it is true that it will be no use to feed him the heart anymore, is there anything you fellow Midas owners have found that they love just as much, but that they will still make use of?

Thanks in advance.

my midas is more or less 8" these days. never fed beef heart personally.

mine gets hikari gold for staple and a variety of frozen foods. bloodworm cubes are a favorite. gets him stoked!

Mine has doubled or nearly tripled in size since I got him as well, but I'm worried because I've heard that there is a point where the growth slows to a point, and after that point the extra fat and protein just runs through them without being absorbed. I was just curious if anyone had run into this problem, or had any thoughts on the subject as far as, when that point seems to occur.

my biggest is about 8" or so and doesnt show any signs of slowing down

yep, seems to always be growing in some form still (8"). noticeably getting some girth these days.

i feed myne lots of krill and omega one pellets..as well as crickets that she snatches from my bichir..but hey it doesnt hurt her she also loves earthworms..

Can't say that I have heard of this nutrient absorbtion problem before, but the whole thing stands to reason I suppose. Once my midas is full grown I plan on cutting out beefheart all together just cause it makes a mess of the water. Not something you have to worry about quite yet though. "The General" (see the link in my signature) is around 10" and still growing rapidly. I'll probably cut the beefheart out at around 12" and stick to shrimp for a treat now and then.
