I moved my Midas into a 55 gallon and would like to give him a tank mate. Problem is no one in a 70 mile radius sells large fish (8 to 12 inch) anymore. Anyone know of a resource to buy large fish in or near NY/PA/NJ tri-state area? I really don't want to grow another monster even though they are cute when they're little. My other concern is he is VERY aggressive and he's my first and only Midas so any suggestions on tank mates? And if how do you sex these guys when they're 1-3 inches, anyone have pics?
Thanx!

Unfortunately, you can't put any tankmates with a Midas in a 55 gallon. He's very aggressive for a reason, and he will kill any other fish.

Also, just an FYI, if you have a male Midas he will eventually outgrow the 55 gallon and need a 75g or larger. A female may do ok in a 55g for life.

As far as sexing goes, it's very hard to sex a young Midas. When he's a few inches larger you can get an experienced fishkeeper to look at its vent area. Other than that, there are no reliable ways to look at a Midas and determine its gender.

yeah you most likely won't be able to have tankmates with it mabye some barbs or other fast moveing fish but thats still risky

as for sexing them i'm pretty sure its midas that travel in large packs in the wild and the dommonint fish is male or female ( can't remember ) when the dommonint fish dies anouther fish rises up to take its place and changes its sex or is it red devils that do this i think its midas

Agreed, once the midas gets over 12 inches (if it's a he) it will need more than 55 gallons for just itself. If you want a temp fish to live up the tank, add a convict or two. While my brother's red devil was small he had it with a breeding pair of cons in a 55. The RD is now 8 inches and he just pulled the cons and has the RD by himself.

most retail stores sell small fish. you could try "That Fish Place" in lancaster though, they sometimes have bigger guys..

Thanks to all who have responded with advice. He's definetely a male he's already about 11-12 inches long, a light peach color with an orangish-red frontosa. I didn't think I'd be able to put anything with him (his nick name is "Dahmer"), but I took a shot in the dark to see if anyone had had any luck in that size tank.
I've had him 4 years since he was 2 inches big, my daughter picked him out at Petsmart for her birthday and I told her he would eat anything she put with him, he hasn't made a liar out of me yet. Thanks again guys.

Like some of the others I would say you are going to need a bigger tank at some point and so you should consider getting one. Use the one you have now for something else.
