An island somewhere......
I'm contemplating on putting one of my midas in an outdoor, unheated pond for the summer..... do you guys think it's do-able? It's summer here in So. Cal and I'm tempted.... to see how much size he will put on and how red he'll get from natural sunlight. I can either try an outdoor pond here at the beach (which obviously gets colder) or at my brothers house who's not as close to the beach...... tempted.

Should be fine, long as you bring it in before temps start dropping in the fall

I summer fish in pond every year :) And I live in Washington state....

Really! What types of fish? What's the average night temperature?

The pond stays in the mid to high 70's at night and gets up to 85 in the day...I live in E. Washington....Day time gets 90's++ night can be 45-60+ sometimes it stays higher than 70 even at night for a month strait....I leave them until the first week of october...Oscars,Red Devils, plecos are all I have done it with...I would put anything in it though...It is 5ft deep and bean shaped big part is 5ft wide, small end is about 3ft wide...It is about 12 feet long total....

i only have had guppy and swordtails outdoors but i find there colours become much brighter and darker.

id do it, how big is the pond? just keep and eye on the temp of the water and things should be fine.

I know of people who keep cichlids ( midas included ) all year round outside with nary a problem...main thing is you put them out when it is hot and let them adjust to the oncoming cold...

i've seen SA and CA cichlids in 11º Celsius and lower without a problem...and I don't think you'll get that cold in south california...
