I was sitting out back last night having a couple beers and decided to pull my rds/midas out of the pond i put them into at the beginning of summer. I figured the temp was still around 70 but after i caught them and put them in the bucket i checked the temp and it was 59 degrees. I got them out just in time. WHEW:WHOA:

wow the 40s. i didnt think they could survive in that cold of water.

How cold can the water actually get before the fish will die? Anyone know?

No doubt. I guess we keep our indoor tanks at pretty constant levels. Imagine the temperature changes even in the tropics. Fish are probably more resilient in the wild (or pond) than in the confines of a tank. Do fish catch ICH very often in the wild? Does anyone have pics of this?

BTW, very cool pond, it is inspiring to the point of I am thinking of heading to home depot to check on some prices!

I would think that the fluctuation in temp would be harmful in a short time. It would compromise the fish's immune system and they would succumb to something.

In the wild, when are you going to find a fish in a small enough body of water to suffer extreme fluctuation like in an ornamental pond of, at most, a few thousand gallons?

Ive said it many times before, we get all in a flap if the temp in our tanks drop by 1/2 of one degree when in truth fish can survive large temp swings without any problem at all. I guess this thread is outstanding proof of that.
