sorry i dont have any pics yet but the two species look so much alike, can anyone give me some tips on figuring out if i have a midas or red devil?
he's about 8" long and ive noticed some progression in aggression within the last month or so. he was sold to me as a red devil but the people at petco where he ws baught were trying to tell me that it was the some species just different name,so you could see why id like a little re-assurance.
thanks:screwy:

Red devil/midas mix most likely, but still great fish! They have great personality. Good luck.

hey thanks guys. it really doesnt matter which species i love em to death.even though thats exactly what he causes...DEATH to all other fish that enters his side of the tank.
thats interesting about them being hybrids from petco, what makes you say that though, do they cross em to try to chill the temperment a lil or is it just what happens.

I believe it's ignorance on breeders knowing the difference between the two. But could be a mistake somewhere causing rd's from some breeder to mix with midas.

Generally midas have a more rounded body and rd are more square. Hard to describe.

Then you have responsible breeders who try to keep them separate. It seems the captive bred midas are usually taller bodied fish with a more developed nuchal hump and flatter face (side view) in adult males. Captive bred red devils are narrower bodied and have a longer snout. My guess is that most everything out there in these two has been mixed somewhere along the line like these guys said but they're still really cool fish. I prefer midas my fav being the barred midas. Just be prepared to be bit. lol

yeha i got a feeling its a RD just because of the info i have gotten has pointed me in that direction.when i baught him they said someonebrought him in ona fluke and they never really order em and i couldnt pass up 4$
yeah he is always aware when im in the room, has never bitten me or tried but ,i have him with 4 oscars, two of which he has taken a liking to and two he has tried to kill non-stop for about a month the tank is aquascaped with a crapload of fake plants and i figured it would be plenty of space , but now i think im tryin to get rid of a pair of tigeroscars

How big is the tank? Mine went psycho at around 10" and wanted to kill everything it could.
