Midas or red devil?

If it wasn't sold under a scientific name we will never know for sure.
A wild RD with the big lips still would give it away. But common CB Midas and RD look too simular to tell apart.

Please read

At the moment there are at least 18 recognized species of Amphilophus, and at least half of them, have the ability to produce those pink/orange/ whitish morphs.
The only way to tell them apart is by knowing which lake their ancestors came from.
And its only been in the last 20 years that these distinct species have been recognized, before that they were all thought to be either citrunellus (Midas) or labiatus (Red Devil).
Because of these decade of lumping in the hobby, most or what are available in LFSs are simply combination of those Amphillophus, they are mutts.
If you buy it a Mid-evel/red devil (from a LFS using that moniker) you must assume it is one of those aquarium strain mutts and should realize you will never know what it is, because it is impossible to tell just by looking, other than its outward appearance suggests the genus Amphilophus..
The only way to get into proper legitimate species is to buy from a conscientious breeder that imports from specific lakes, and then keeps the species separate to inhibit inbreeding. .
Kind of like buying a dog or cat mix mutt from the pound, as opposed to getting a pure bred with papers.
