Would a 5ft x 18 inch x 18 inch or 4ft x 2 ft x 2ft be the better size for a midas that has to go into his own tank?. I think he is a male, what do you think?

go for the 4'x2'x2'. It will give your fish more room if you choose to put rocks and drift woods. I mean the 18" deep with rocks and drift woods would only have about 12" of free swimming space from the front and back of the aquarium, while the 2' tank will still have a lot of swimming space even if your put lots of rocks and woods.

BTW, is that really a Midas? How can you tell? I don't know the difference between midas and red devil.. (⌐.⌐)

Either of those tanks would work. Was it sold to you as a midas and from what reputable dealer was it?

The snout/lips aswell as the build are the way to tell. Longer snout, protruding lips(though aren't as pronounced as in F0-F1), and slender build are indications of a RD. Shorter/rounder snout, brouder build, and more pronounced hump are indicators that it's Midas. The male Midas in my Avatar which was my old male is a good example for you. However, unless from a reputable breeder like Jeff Rapps or Ken Davis its 99.9% going to be a hybrid of the two most likely. By the looks of it it's genes are mostly RD if not all. Nice looking fish. 75g would be mosty ideal for him solo, might get away with a 125g-180g if he is mellow and you want to keep the oscar. Just be sure to get Dither fish such as tinfoil barbs and clown loaches to help lower aggression. Good luck and enjoy.;)

The 24" tank would be a good choice for a single Monster Midas. And I have to agree on the deco comment. I have the 120g (60x18x26) and find that with one large item that my Midas hides under at times and calls home, it can be too narrow. I would love the extra width to give some more room for my big guy but I also needed a 5ft tank. I could not find an affordable one that was 24" wide. Both sizes will work but the extra width would be appreciated.
