I have a few tank setups and one of the 75's has my barred Midas in it. I'm about to get a 220 and I've heard stories of people's Midas' mellowing out once they got into a larger tank (180 +)

I was just wondering if this might be a common occurrence for people?

Yeah that's been my experience with many aggressive cichlids. I'm guessing the extra space allows them to feel less obligated to fend off "their area".

It's not to say they won't go to war over nothing, but larger tanks with multiple fish or non breeding pairs tend to allow everyone their own space (with in comfort). So less reason to chase off and protect it.

What tank sizes did you go between and which of your monsters mellowed out?

Sorry for being late, I had a single trimac as well as a single RD, both kept in 75, that went into a 180, both were "wet pets" and glass banged. Yet when upgraded they didn't pay each other or me any mind again.

Yep. More space lessens agression.

Also, some " carefull overstocking" lessens agression, if spacce is not ridicule from the start.

Imho, this only works if no females are in the mix.

My midas was pretty easygoing when it was in a 120g (60x18 footprint) but would still go on a rampage every now and then and chase my red hooks like he was ready to kill. I moved him into a 210g (72x24 footprint) and the behavior stopped. He was ultra mellow and never chased the silver dollars. Funny but he never had any issue with any other cichlids just the silver dollars.

Your Midas will no doubt mellow out, if only a little. In the wild they defend about 4' of space around a nesting site, which is why in a 75 or a standard 90, they will usually fight anything you put with them.

Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences. At the moment mine is still sharing his space with a 4-5 inch red devil. There was a little FH in there but I moved her to my other 75 that my large, male, SRD FH was occupying. I also Thad to place a small jag in there but it didn't seem like the jag was as street smart/ survival savvy as the red devil or FH so after a couple of days, and probably near death I put him back in the 220.
