Ok let me start by saying this is an idea I've been thinking about for a few years now but I recently got a promotion at my work so the money would be right in 5 years this could happen. I don't have the time or knowledge to run it full time so question is who do you hire for this kind of thing?

Start with a franchise then. Look at Aquarium Adventure, I know they do franchises. If you can't run it full time then there's no reason to open one. If you can make enough money to fully open one with 250k or something then do it....don't hire someone.

Take some business classes to get a better understanding about opening a business. Hope to see you open a shop in the near future!

i suggest you dont sell fish at all or pets at the lcfs. sell something more better for the money at the lcfs.

I have a couple of friends that did this, they were both college grads with some science background. They both hate it now and even though they sell a lot of oddballs and fancy plecos they both say never turn your hobby into a job. Definately not a real money maker. Talk to a few pa and pop shops and see what thier opinnion is. I have always heard negative. Some one chime in with a positive. thanks

If I had a business I would tell up and coming people it sucked too .

Go for it just be prepared for the worse and get a goods location, location is really key

Location location location.... Not just to put up ur shop... Gotto consider the demographics of your place... All the best to you.... I myself have some plans to open up one sometime in future... Just so I can have all the fish in the world lol

I would say most LFS' owners i know personally may not necessarily enjoy fish keeping the same way they used to, but each seem to have found a niche that they try and perfect... i guess perfect example would be one shop owner i know who basically loves doing aquascapes went from selling mainly equipment, fish and plants to now selling mainly plants and aquascaped tanks along with a few small community fish and shrimp...

See the thing is there is no lfs is my town we had two years ago but one was found guilty of tax fraud the other an elderly couple owned and they retired and sold the building to a church.

Best thing to do in your situation would be to talk to some owners of fish stores in your area (reputable ones) and look into becoming a silent partner or buying there store from them, and keeping them employed there to run the shop.
