I'm getting back into the hobby, I want to get a 65 gal rimless
48" 18" 16" brand new set up, I really like the beani cichlid and Cuban cichlid. I like the way the beani looks more but they don't seem to be too active or lively from the vids I've seen on YouTube. I had a female Cuban once that was so active and entertaining. Does anyone know of any active beani's or have owned one and can share your experience? The last thing I wanna do is go through all the trouble of raising a fish to have it be boring and lethargic and end up getting rid of it, I just don't know if the beani is worth it

I've had both, and I do believe Nandopsis tetracanthus is a more gregarious species.
I also find the smaller the tank, the less active almost all cichlids will be, and in a small tank like a 65 gal that may be the case. Nosferatu beanii are not great living with any other fish anyway, and that tank a beani would not tolerate any other tankmates.
A female tetracanthus would probably do better in that tank, although it is too small for an adult male.

female tetracanthus above, male below

female beani in spawning colors below

another similar cichlid that might work in that tank would be Nosferatu bartoni

I plan on getting one or the other like I said I'm leaning toward the beani due to its beautiful colors. Whatever fish I do get it will have the 65 all to itself with plenty of care, strong filtration and fresh water changes, thank you for your input, how big were you able to grow your beani?

My male hit around 8", but I moved to so it never was able to reach full potential in my tanks. They first spawned at half that size

females were always about 1/3 smaller.
