Currently, I have a 12 inch oscar and about a 6 inch male lyonsi in my 125. I may have a chance to add A. hogaboomorum, an H. Deppi or maybe even both.

Could these four fish work? Or am I asking for trouble? If all four couldn't work, which combo would you recommend I try, that would involve me keeping the lyonsi? I don't know the size of the hogaboomorum or the deppi as I type this, so until I know, for the purposes of this question... lets assume they are the same size as the lyonsi. I'll update this once I have confirmed their sizes.

Thanks!

Without a question of a doubt, I'd give it a definite..........Maybe?

Theres kinda no rhyme or reason when combing cichlids. Some combos work while others fail and some identical combos work for someone in pacific standard time while they fail in eastern standard time.

Probably not a lot of help, but I can say from experience, just have some kind of backup plan (another tank, fellow hobbyist, good return policy) in place an try it. All cichlids are different and all combos as different as well.

I myself tried to introduce a jag to my large community(300) with very few fish and failed, yet 2 days later I placed a 6" angelfish in a 90 with a 7.5" argentea and they are best buds.

Yeah... tell me about it. I had two angels in the 125 a while back, with a slew... and I mean a slew... of other CAs, and no one ever bothered the angels! LOL... so, maybe I'll just give it a shot and see what shakes out.

^^ I would. You never know. Out of all the "aggressive" cichlids I've ever owned, a GT and a firemouth were the only 2 problematic fish besides the jag. All the textbooks will tell you Firemouth's are not super aggressive, but he attacked every fish I own including my 9-10" Midas......I don't think he ever stopped gill-flaring even when he was by himself. Horrible fish.........

Go for it, with a backup plan......

i agree try it,if it were me i would maybe take out the oscar,if you could live without him.then try 3-5 big dithers of your choice.the SD's that i have used were not skittish, others have bad luck with them.or another idea would be:instead of the dithers,3 small growing CA cichlids, with the other 3.

It never hurts to try, because I have a variety of cichlids in my 125 gallon. My bloodparrot, black convict, and firemouth cause problems and I have more aggressive cichlids then that, like a Cuban,Jack Dempsey, and Salvini where they barely bother anyone, unless they feel threaten.

Deppi are very aggressive. Mine will attack any and all fish bigger then him. Depending on the temperament of the oscar, I think the other three should be fine together.

Thanks, all. I'm gonna give a shot. I'm gonna try to keep the oscar, because I have a soft spot for the guy... I rescued him from an animal shelter. So I feel obligated to let ol' Bubba live happily ever after right here in this house, if I can at all help it.

should be an interesting adventure... I'm excited. I'll have the new fish at the next CCA meeting here in Maryland.

^^ I think your chances are good. Most fish look at another 12" fish and don't know that, they may be a footlong puppydog. Size means a lot.

Post pics and keep us updated! Looking forward to the progress
