Long story short, I added a new piece of driftwood that I had sterilized and was soaking in water earlier. After I added it it seemed within an hour or so my fish were not quite gasping but have slightly labored breathing. They've been calmer than normal. Also, they still ate afterwards fine.

I did a 25% WC immediately and tested the water afterwards.

Water parameters:
pH: 6.8-7
ammonia: 0.0
nitrites: .25
temp: 79*

Is it the driftwood piece that I added today? It's birch and was told I wouldn't have problems with that kind. What should my next plan of action be?
