dont know where you read that all oscars look like that when young, none of the ones i've ever kept looked like that, except the two "zebras". red oscars..when young..look pretty much the same as when they are adults, red tigers have a marbled pattern with or orange coloration inbetween. maybe its just a tiger, and not a red tiger..i dont mean to argue with you..i've just never seen one like that turn out to be a red tiger

I think it was from a post here on MFK that I read that. For red tigers I think the red coloration in between comes later after the zebra pattern because that's what happened to mine, i bought her at about 1.5" including the tail. It's kinda cool if you can buy a very small zebra patterned oscar and it can turn out to be anything. I don't mean to argue either and there is no tension. I'm just saying that is how mine turned out and you can tell by the pic that it's a red tiger. I think maybe the red tigers you had were already past the zebra coloration stage.

Can't wait to see how Pete's turn out either, not for the sake of argument but just for the enjoyment of seeing how a nice fish develops.

It's always exciting when you see fish with potential. :)
