Just wondering and might want to do in the future, Could you get one of those $15 hard plastic pools with a Fluval 204 and get a breeding colony of Ghost Shrimp? How about crayfish? Mosquito fish? I know you could but I mean get a decent amount to use as feeders and sell some. Any suggestions to improve my idea?

I'm no expert on the matter, but i'm sure if you put in some sort of substrate, and lots of climbing spots and all the other necessities required to get these shrimp/crays to breed i don't see why not???

In fact, it would probably work really well if you could get your hands on some marble crays since you can pretty much guarantee once one gives birth, you will soon be over-run with crays...

I keep ghosties as pets, so it makes me sad for them to be eaten, but as far as breeding it is really difficult. The eggs hatch as larva and are free floating. They need like greenwater and lots of micro particle foods for a week. They will be killed by pretty much any filter. I read that they are pretty slow growing too.

Here's an article:

Mosquito fish are easy breeders, but they love to eat their babies. You'd need A LOT of fine floating plants and surface floaters for hiding spots. The females are kinda aggro and bug the males a lot from what I've seen.

I have hatched ghost shrimp eggs hatch but never keep them alive.
I have bred mosquito fish and 1/8 of the fry survived to adulthood without hiding places but if I do Mosquito fish I would add a ton of plants. I have a 50 gallon bucket I might use. I might even do both mosquito fish and marbled crays since they live in different parts of the tank.

If you get sponges or covers for the filter you will be ok. And aslong as you put food in the pond and keep parameters perfect you should be fine. Just provide some top water plant I think for them. Also sounds like a good idea!

I do this for guppies in a 10 gallon tank, planted with about 6 large anubis and more duck weed and water lettuce than my Ryukin and my mothers red eared sliders can eat, the tank gets over run with the floating plants,

but i have 5 female guppies and 2 males, with out removing anyone i have 50-80 fry per female every 30 ish days. granted my females are mature and are well over a year old..and are HUGE they are about 2 1\2inches and look like whales, i just have to scoop clouds of fry out and feed them to my sculpin, it takes about a month or two to get the fry to a half inch ..but its easy i just dump lots of food.. slightly more then they can eat every day ( the tank is waaaayyy over filterd) and the snails clean up the rest,

point is i think it should be done easily in a pool if it is so easy in a 10 gallon with such results, and my guppies are just fancys from my LFS

try frog bit on the surface the it multiply like crazy and you could even sell that on top of selling any extra fry you have

good luck and let me know how it works out im hoping to so do something similar my self

I guess i should of asked this before, what fish are you planning on feeding??? since depending on the type of fish your feeding, you may find a certain prey item better for that particular fish...
