what tank size do these rays require, I’ve seen the males only get around 12" so would a 24" wide tank be adequate enough for 1 male?

DB junkie DB junkie may be able to help.

A 12" (across) ray's tail isn't much shorter if any then the disk is wide. 12" across would probably come close to touching front and back of a 2' wide tank at the same time.... IF kept like that it'll probably result in a shortened tail - tip will turn white and fall off. Seen this happen with short tanks too as they bob up and down on the glass landing on their tail.

You can start them out in as small of a tank as you like and just move them into larger tanks as needed, but I keep my adults in 36" or more wide. It does take them many years to grow though, they are slow growers.....

I'd also be aware that just like BDs the term means nothing anymore.... Chances are any Marble you find for sale will have the "mini" name attached to it just like ANY ray with any blackie blood in it now constitutes the name "BD".

thank you for sharing that, so what rays would be ideal for a tank lets say starting at 24" then will be moved to tank 30" id never keep an animal if im going to damage it by inadequate housing requirements

Lil Marbles are definitely one of the smaller species.... But finding REAL ones can be tricky.

IF new to rays my best advice would be to find a salty seasoned keeper and ask them for honest advice....

OR you can do as I did and listen to the arm chair experts for years and eventually figure out that the best advice comes from experience. Find an honest experienced keeper and learn from their mistakes. IF honest they'll tell you about the mistakes they made year after year.

my Mini male pups are generally between 8 and 10 inch when they max out, Richard.H is many generations further and I believe his are even smaller. However mine do have particularly long tails, I would say the tails are longer than the disk is wide. For a 12inch ray 24inch isn't enough but if they are closer to 8inch than its a possibility.
