I recently bought a 20 gallon bow front spur of the monent, you know how that gos, anyway I want to have a single fish in this tank what do you suggest. I would like a red wolf or ouffer of some sort but I'm not quite sure that is possible.

If you want just a single fish and for it to be either a Hoplias or a puffer the only wolf I have heard about that is small enough is so uncommon I haven't even seen a picture, the Hoplias brasiliensis, as for FW puffers there are the 6" max Amazon (Colomesus asellus) and the 7" max Green (Tetraodon fluviatus) By the way, welcome to MFK.
ahhh, that puffer reminds me of my old poffer that passed away, didnt survive the ick attack..... 
I have three, Nandus, and I have seen them eat dispropotionatly large food. they are great.
