They're not really monster size fish, but go great with monster size fish as long as it doesn't fit in anyone's mouth...
I know these are common, but what species are they? The store had no idea or even cared, they were about 5 bucks each.

Some tankmates, not shown are delhezi and roselines barbs?
 
They look to me, they might be from the Geophagus alifrons complex.
There are many species and location variants from that complex that at a young age, all appear very similar.

Ah interesting!
I love any species of geos, these seem like they're a really good species to have, a lot of personality in these little buggers.

Long ago I had 1 in a 55 that grew to about 6 or 7 inches in 3 years, he grew these really long fins and was one of the most beautiful fish I've kept. He was kept with small ATFs, Tigrinis, flower horns and everyone complemented the geo.
 
I'm thinking Geophagus surinamensis.
