I am looking for mini versions of US native fish. I know actual minis do not exist for many species, but just looking similar is enough. Preferably small enough to fit in a 30 gallon or so.

For example American flagfish look like miniature sunfish, Jewel Cichlids especially Hemichromis Moanda look like miniature pumpkinseed sunfish, and there are plenty of catfish that look like the big ones that stay small.

I would be particularly interested in a mini bass, gar, or pickerel.

Hill trout or celestial pearl danios look like mini trout. Maybe a halfbeak for a gar…or a golden wonder killie for a pickerel?

Pickerel - Luciocephalus aura
Bass - Coreoperca kawamebari
Sunfish - blue spotted sunfish
Trout - Barilius sp, Raiamas sp

Great list, that Coreoperca kawamebari would be perfect what an awesome fish! Can't find where one has ever been offered for sale though, so probably not available in the USA. Blue spotted sunfish look great, I think these can be found near me as well which is neat.

I have been interested in trying a halfbeak. Might try them+flagfish+ a very small catfish.

Try a madtom. Native, stay small.

Probably the closest thing to sculpin. The advantage is that it does not require an expensive chiller.iTS SCHISMATOGOBIUS SP.
