In my pond recovers thread it was mentioned that I was brave for always having fishing gear with me - one poster lost $2500 worth of gear in a car theft.

I dont want to stir the pot too badly but it could easily devolve into a discussion on fishing equipment costs. So let's have one!

So what kind of fishing do you do (mostly)? What would it take to outfit you well enough to catch fish and be content equipment wise? Equipment list and approximate budget?

For the purposes of discussion we all promise not to share this info with wives, parents, etc.

So my fishing is almost entirely shore based small pond stuff in N Florida - bass and various panfish

My gear stabilizes out at about $50 to entirely replace at any one time all from walmart

5-6' light spinning rod w 6 to 10lb test mono on it $20-30

6 beetle spin (up to 1/8oz) $1.25 each

2/0 J hooks $3 for 5 or 6

2-4 packages of 4" and 6" worms. $2/pk

1/16 and 1/32oz bullet weights $3/pk

small split shot $3

I keep a little tacklebox (one of those 6 compartment 3"long 1" wide per section) with one for hooks, one for sinkers, one for floats/bobbers, the rest for little lures. On top of that i keep a 10" collapsed pen fishing rod and the little 3" cube box that holds the reel. All in a little sack lol. That's all i need for anywhere :) Total cost would be about $50 but it's a tiny pack.

I wouldn't really call it minimalist fishing equipment. But I have everything in my truck, granted it's fully hidden. I have a 6 foot light rod with a bait caster in one of those rod holders places behind the passenger seat in the corner of the cab. Every lure I own is with me at all times. I have plenty of little cubbies on the floor behind the seats underneath a peice of the carpet.. I built them "out of sight, out of mind" as my carpet is glued to a door that opens up to reveal the boxes. But if I ever see a place I want to fish. I'm always ready.

I couldn't really say I only do one type of fishing I do an equal amount of bass, catfishing, trout (season appropriate) fishing.

For bass fishing when I fished the collegiate FLW tour or to even just recreationally fishing now

Rods & Reels-$1500

Tackle-$500-$1000 this includes terminal tackle along with baits and line.

Catfishing

Custome Rods with reels-$500

Bait-Free (live Bluegill)

Tackle-$25

Trout fishing

Waders-around $100

Rod and reel-$300

Tackle-$10 (treble hooks, split shots, baiting needle)

Tin minnow bucket-$10

Minnows-$5

I need to find less expensive hobbies. Luckily most bass expenses were covered by the team itself but since graduating in May the endless amount of tackle and rods has come to an end.

Couple sticks of TNT and a lighter :)

These days, I rarely take out the "big" tackle box any more, but I'm always ready with my 6' med-light action rod, spinning reel with 6lb test mono, and a small tackle that I put together for my 8yo son.
