What is the minimum aquarium size for a group of eight adult clown loaches?

I acquired eight 2" clown loaches today from PetSmart, and I want to be sure that I have the proper aquarium for them once they outgrow the current aquariums that I have available for them. By the way, they're currently in a 55 gallon aquarium, and I realize that they grow pretty slow before they hit 6" or so.

I have a buddy of mine that have about 6 very large ones in a 30 gallon. They are healthy and doing very well. Matter of fact they are the largest loaches I have ever seen.

How big are these loaches? I feel kind of sad for them.

To the OP. I would say that a good tank for a full grown loach (12 inches) is a 6 ft by 2 ft tank. I have never seen a full grown loach before so I think you have a long time before you need to address this. Your loaches will do fine in the 55 for a long long time. The more space the loaches have the more antics you'll see.
