what would you say the minimum number of discus i should keep in a 72 bowfront?
i'd like to add some rams, cories, and maybe some kind of tetras etc...

would one fare well.... that's what i'm asking if three ok or should they be in even numbers? larger? what?

ok let me rephrase this, is three ok?
three unsexed discus... in a 72 bow....

No.

It's either 1 single specimin or no less than 6.

if you choose to go with 1 and put tank mates in with it, you'll likely never see the thing.

If you go with 6 you'll get a shoal in the tank and see them on a consistent basis, with maybe one being the odd fish out hiding a lot.

In that tank, you could fit 8 or 9 tops. I would go with 6 or 7 along with a school of maybe 12-20 rummynose tetra and 8-12 cory cats.

I would not add the bolivian ram until after the discus had grown into adulthood, as bolivians can get territorial and WILL bully fish much larger than them - thus making the competition for food that much more intense.

i was thinking more along the lines of german rams... i rather don't like bolivian rams.
would kribs work?

Kribs are a definate no, way too violent.

Blue ram would be fine, but like I said. I would not add any other cichlids until the discus reach adult size.

Patience is very important in this hobby.

oh i know, i just never dealt with discus before. so should the discus be the very first thing in? i mean it's not like the cories or tetras are going to put up a fight right...

I would cycle the tank with the tetra and cory cats to establish a strong bioload then add the discus about a month down the line.

Depending on the size of the discus, your tetra are going to freak out for the first week or so and relegate themselves to a corner of the tank, but they'll come to realize during feeding time that the discus are harmless (unless you get neon tetra and they become snacks!).

Just remember that when blue ram spawn the males get territorial and they WILL chase discus around - regardless of being 1/10th their size.
