minimum oscar tank size?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i would say a minimum of 75g for 1 adult O, a 55 would be long enough but at only 18inches wide they dont provide adequate turning room;)

A 75 is the bare minimum for 1 O. A 55 is only 12" deep so a full grown O will be very cramped. The bigger the better. If you are thinking of a pair of O's a 125 is the minimum.

I'd say a 75. You could probably keep one in a 55 but the 12" width would make for a not-so-great life for the O.

My 55 measures 48x14x20h, unless I doing my convertions wrong (1 gallon = 3.79L) but they are the correct measurements, 48x12x20h = 50 gallons. Anyway, I wouldn't keep a full grown oscar in a 4ft unless it was 1.5ft wide. I have 2 Oscars (maxed out at 10.5" & 11") in a 48x24x24 and they are going great.

Standard 55 gallon 4 ft tanks are 13 inches deep. They are fine for one oscar. I have also seen one oscar happily kept in a 3 ft by 24 inch 75 gallon tank. Same footprint as the 4 ft.

So that tank would have to be 21"high to achieve 56.7g minus the thickness of your glass. If it's 20" high it falls short after subtracting the glass thickness.
I agree the Oscar would be fine however.IMO:)
