I am thinking about picking up a 17" widebar, but I'm concerned that my current tank is too small. So what would you guys say would be a minimum size for a dat this size? My current tank is a 200 that is 8L x 2W x 20"T.

That tank would be fine I think.
I was going to say the minimum would be a standard 180 - 6 x 2 x 2.

I personally think it's a good sized tank for a dat; the question is what else are you keepin with it????

i just sold my 15'' widebar as i thought it was getting a bit big for my 180g and was not swimming about as much.
however a 8'er would be better so i think its fine.

The tank currently has the following:

1 - 20" Silver aro
1 - 14" Mono PBass
1 - 13" TSN
1 - 13" Sailfin marble cat
1 - 9.5" ST
1 - 8.5" IT
1 - 8.5" ST
1 - 7" ST
3 - 6" Red hook silver dollars

I am looking to sell the two smaller STs and probably the two catfish as well.

once u sell the 4 other fish, the big ST should work out.

300G would be a suite for the ST.

the only real issue I think would be the aro, I think, and also I too would get rid of the cats.
