Hi all,
The last while I've been looking at the 3d backgrounds people have put together and while they look great they weren't exactly what I wanted.
So I came up with the idea of building minith tirith from lord of the rings and managed to salvage enough polystyrene foam to give it a go. It'll hopefully look similar to this
I had one flat piece of foam and a lot of scrap bits and began by cutting the half circle curves for the walls.
I siliconed them together in layers and glued them to a piece of clear Perspex which will act as a base.[URL=http://s1011.photobucket.com/user/rustyspurs/media/Mobile%20Uploads/DSC_0464_zpsf859f396.jpg.html]

I googled how to shape styrofoam and hot wire or knife is apparently the way to go, however when I have started something I have no patience to wait on tools in the post. So I fashioned my own using a camping stove and some BBQ tongs :). It worked like a charm too..
Time for the cement.
I have 2 coats on and will have to touch up a little bit tomorrow, I just hope it drys far lighter than it currently looks.
Time will tell:)
That's it so far, I'll post how the colour turned out tomorrow.

Nice work!

Hopefully, the high bouyancy of the foam won't be an issue. There was a styrofoam/cement 3D build on here, a couple of months ago, that was scrapped because of the bouyancy issue.

Yeah I know they are very bouyant, I didn't want to silicone it to my ply tank as it's 220 gallon and I have nowhere to put my fish. I forgot to mention in earlier post but I've added plastic dumbbell weights to the inside of the structure and have left extra Perspex at the base which will allow me to weigh it down further with the sand substrate and rocks etc.. Fingers crossed its enough
