Ohhhh....I like how you think. And no you are not off topic at all. I love turning trash into treasure. I am curious how much water a chest freezer will hold (depth wise). The one that we had had a plastic liner and had sheet metal all the way around. The insides are only foam but they have a nice reinforcing mesh of tubing in there. The pressure may get high enough to cause serious bulging but that old one we had would probably hold together if the back seams were welded (they were screwed). A new one may require channel banding to hold the pressure. I am sure you could get two dead freebies from the local junk dealer. Get one to destroy to learn its weaknesses and the other to beef up where needed.

What you might need to know: Fiberglass resin will bond to most plastics. Areas that are not reinforced such as where the compressor is housed, or corners if the lining is modular, should be beefed up with mat and resin. If you have very early failure in your R&D freezer, you may want to remove the compressor and other guts and add reinforcement in those hollow areas.

I have thought about that as well, I want to try to keep trout in one myself. I am not very good at these kinds of projects though and need to actually find a freezer. If you end up doing it let us know how it goes and take pictures.

I have seen an old chest style deepfreeze that was set at max temp. filtered and use to keep salmon smolts in, they were for a toxins study.
