Mixed African tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
No mate, they are to different.
The water conditions are the opposite ends of the scale.
It might work in the short term, but long term 1 or the other will die through stress.
Then there is the aggression of the Malawis, and the dietry requirements.
If you want flashy colours and lots of personality, choose Malawis, or a quieter tank go for Gouramis.

Convicts will need to be kept seperate again..
Basically, Malawis in one tank, Gouramis in another tank, and Convicts in another!

What size tank do you have mate?

90% of the time when people say african cichlids they mean Malawis since that is what is commonly available. You don't see Tangs or Victorians at box stores you just see a tank of "African Cichlids" that are mostly mbuna and maybe some peacocks or haps.

Lets see I have a 29 gallon tank with 2 Zebras, 2 Peacocks, 2 kenyi hybrids or as the LFS called them mixed africans, 2 Cobalt Blues, and 1 Acie. But the only other things are 1 common pleco and 1 stripped raph cat. I was just thinking of adding something different since the goums like the upper level and everything else bottom, just making ideas. And the other reason is PETSMART has a big 1$ sale so its not like I am losing a whole lot.
Thanks for all the info and what I will do is try to find a smaller tank to maybe start them off in to just add some other fish in the mix and that gives me a excuse to have another tank in the house.

I dont know about the other fish but the gouramis will hold his own and maybe be more aggresive then the african cichlids, i did the noob move of having them all in one tank and the gouramis went crazy and owned in the tank he would bang with them without a problem but i took him out cause it was way to much stress on all of them He now has a tank with some painted dianos i believe ( i know dont buy painted fish i didnt girl did it her tank )
