Hey guys, i've had several people tell me different things about ornates growth rates and sizes, and just figured i'd get the facts straight from the people with the most experience.

I've had many people tell me that they are relatively slow growers after a foot and take about 2 years to reach 18". Fact or Fiction?

Somebody on here yesterday told me captive bred Ornates rarely reach over 18" :screwy:, don't think this one is correct but i figured i'd ask. Fact or Fiction?

Last Thing, what would you guys consider a fair price for an ornate in the 5-6" range? And how long would it be able to live in a 75 before requiring an upgrade?

Thanks guys, I love my polys and want an ornate eventually, just don't want to push the limits too much.

Hi mate, ornates do get bigger than 18" but depends on the fish,it will take 2 years + to get to this size or you could be lucky and it grow quicker, depends on the fish.
Should be fine in a 75 for say 10 months possibly more but it depends on the fish and the footprint of the 75,obviously floor area is alot more important than height.

Just seen your sig,if thats whats going to be in with the ornate then you will have to have rethink on some of them.
People will be along soon to give you more advice.

I have one ornate and it has grown from 3 inch to 12 inch in less then a yr(april-today). I am currently looking at a 125gallon cause the one i had on the floor cracked. So ya the ornate would be alright in a 75 for about a yr or so then u would need an upgrade. Also the pleco may suck on the poly's slim coat and the giiant danios will be food eventually

yeah i know, only getting him if i re-do the stock, pleco is already gone, the giant danios are basically just there for movement i enjoy watching my oscar chase them, and even then i'm in the process of deciding whether to keep the oscar or not, got him from petsmart trying to save him and while he seems happy i haven't had much luck curing the Hith i got him with which was kinda the point

Thanks though :P - btw foot print is basic 4' by 18"

A lot of individual Polys tend to have their own growth rate. I purchased one Ornate at 6" and it grow to 8.5" (passed away now:() in a year while I just bought a baby Ornate at 2" back in July and is at 8.5" now.
