Why does everyone say not to mix africans and american cichlids? I had two oscars and 3 "mixed africans" my wife liked and brought home one day. They were fine together for about 3 years. The Africans didn't survive the move. Too stressed. There were all in a ninety by the way. I know everyone said not to mix, but I figured they weren't that expensive if the oscars didn't like sharing. Thanks

I have two Honduran Red Points in my African tank. This tank was started with all fry about 1-1.5". They are still getting along for now. They are all the same size aprox. I think that is the biggest factor.

My oscars were about double the size of the africans, I guess it depends on the personality of the fish involved.

Usually most Africans at sub-adult size (3"-5") range can take on most fully grown ca/SA cichlids and own them. Larger Africans with any kind of cichlid are very aggressive and I think that most Africans have a meaner disposition.
