So i have a bunch of different cichlids in one 35 gallon tank. So far i've had no problems.... so tell me why you guys think its so bad to mix them?

Yes, different water, different diet, tank too small. Do some research and you will see very quickly it's not advisable for many many reasons. You can't keep eather at there best in water sutable for one or the other. Don't do it.

When it comes to mixing continents, water usually isn't the issue. Many CA cichlids come from waters as hard and alkaline as the rift lakes and if you're fish are tankraised then it matters even less.
What you need to take into account are your fish's aggression levels and feeding habits.
I am personally not going to tell you that you can't mix old world with new world, I've done it plenty. I prefer not to but matching fish based on aggression and feeding requirements you can avoid most if not all of the mixing superstition.
What concerns me is that you have your fish in a 35 gallon tank. I can't think of too many non-dwarf African or Central American cichlids that will tolerate tankmates very well in such a small tank past sexual maturity, when they begin to claim and demand more territory and become more aggressive. You have not stated which cichlids you are keeping in this tank. Regardless, unless you plan on upgrading I don't see a long-term success.

i totally agree with the guy above me. the water does not matter so much anymore as if your buying your ciichlids from a lfs both ca and african cichlids have adapted to the same water. you really dont think these fish stores keep different water qualities in there tanks do you? your main problem would be aggression and tank size. i have africans and central mixed in a 180 gallon and there all fine.

Well they are all happy so i don't see a problem
how do you know they are happy

because they are really active. they have lots of personality and they just seem happy :)
in actuality, all of them could be very stressed. depending upon the PH and water, one group is additionally stressed out. its kinda cruel to the fish
