I'm a cichlid noob. Can anyone advise if it's ok to mix a community of malawi cichlids (yellow labs/sp.44/something) with 2 jack dempseys and 2 frontosa?

You can but dont do it. African cichlids require different water to parameters to american cichlids. Both would adapt to the water you keep them in but you may not see the best from your fish in terms of activity, colourings and breeding. Besides the yellow labs while smaller will kick the arse out of JD and the fronts.

Okay. I'll have to reconsider getting those then....

really? I heard that jack demseys were pretty aggressive, hence their name. didn't know yellow labs were even more so.

When the JD's were named (early 1900's I think) they were thought to be relatively aggresive. However now that more is known and documented cichlids like Midas, devils, terrors. dovi etc are considered to be the bad boys.
I find that JD's look like little tough guys but they are quite shy and prefer to hide away.

My JD fights my Syno. for the best hiding spot all the time. They usually share it. They should have been named "Butterbean" instead of Jack Dempsey.

fronts are very docile from my experience, but with a good mixture, it is possible to do mbunas with fronts...just depends on the fish and their temperament. i find if you house them all together when they are young, they seem to get used to each other...never had a JD, but from what i have seen they can go either way with aggression...i think diet also can add to that factor.

in my personal experience i have mbunas with midas, hornets, jaguars, texas and firemouth and they seem to get along well (they have from october 2006 to date)
