mixing cichlids

hi i currently have both african and american cichlids in my tank, i have been told recently that you are not supossed to do this but i was wandering why, all of my fish seem to be getting along fine. and i was just wandering how can you tell the differnece btween a blue acara and a green terror and what is the differences between them
