Ok, please don't kill me for what I'm going to ask. Remember, I'm a newb.

Ok well I like fan tail goldies and those little neon tetras. Is it possible that these two can mix in the same tank, problem free?? IM ASKING BEFOREHAND.

If they can, what precautions could I take... thanks

The goldfish might eventually eat them when it gets big enough.

Yeah the neon tetras stay pretty small. And goldfish produce a lot of waste so you'll be spending extra money on filtration. Their preferred temperature ranges might be different too.

thanks a lot guys.. and for not crucifying me hehe. i might not be a MFKER yet, but when i grow up i wanna be like u guys! :headbang2

good to hear.

Yeah you don't want to mix goldfish with tropical. They require different temp ranges. There is a few degrees in their tolerated ranges that match up but neither of your fish will be completely comfortable and that will shorten their lifespan. Plus goldfish are dirty little creatures and never stop growing until they die. My advice is to go tropical. What size tank do you have?

Not necessarily. Fancy goldfish prefer their temperature a little warmer than the pond types by at least 76 degrees max which the neons tetras fortunately tend to thrive than anything higher than 78 degrees as their tolerance range from 72-78 degrees. Neons are subtropical in the sense they prefer cooler temperature than most people think.

Although temperature is not an issue, unfortunately, size here matters as fancy goldfish reach 8-10 inches while pond types reach 18 inches. Compare this to a measly 1.5 inch neon and see what happens. I won't bother finishing the sentence from here.;)

girl_interrupted, could you please tell us how big your tank is? I would like to know this myself so I can figure out a plan if you want to try goldfish assuming of course, the tank size is no less than 30g.

That does not mean you are not welcome here. This may be a monster fish site but your passion and responsibility count even if your fish are not the monster size most of the people here have. Everyone is welcome here. There is no singling out. If you have any more questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

Alot of people have "community" tanks here they just dont talk about it as much. If you are looking for color and your tank size is right. Calico Fantails have beautiful colors on them also. They can add alot of color to a tank.

How large is your tank?

yikes lots of requests for my tank size lol. As of the moment I wanted a neon tetra. Just one. So I have a one gallon tank :nilly: yea yea i know! tiny!! But people told me in another thread that i could fit a neon tetra in that small of a tank. I have an issue space right now, so I can't get a big tank nor my fantail goldie yet. And not that I should be listening to petco :grinno: but at the store the neon tetra sign said it could do in a 1 gallon. so thats my first project.

I want to get a bigger tank for a fantail goldie but I am at a loss as to where to get one (not super expensive).

Fantail can thrive in a 5 gallon, right??
