depends on the size of the tank, temperament of the individual fish etc. in the right environment, I'm sure lyonsi and firemouths would get along fine.
as for definite no no's....that's a tough one....there really aren't too many DEFINITE...but dovii or umbriferum mixed with other cichlids in anything smaller than a multiple hundred gallon tank would be a no no long term.

trial and error. depending on what tank your using and what fish you like. i think one of the best ways is to buy the fish you want and put them in a large tank. as time goes by and the fish start to reach mid size you wlll see who the trouble makers are and who can tolerate other fish. remove the trouble makers and keep what seems to be working.
