Ok so I am switching from one brand of food to another. Is it better to mix the old brand with the new brand slowly increasing the amount of new brand or does it really matter? If it helps I'm using the food for my Jack Dempsey.

I'd say try the new brand and see how your fish reacts.

If it doesn't like the new branding, mixing the new with the old may actually make it more difficult - your fish is probably going to pick out the old brand and refuse to eat the new brand. If you really want to switch, offer the new brand exclusively.

Probably only would really matter if your JD refused to eat the new stuff. My JD refused to eat certain foods I fed and I could see mixing the two together helping make the transition. Or not feeding for a day or so then going with the new food. Whatever works for your fish really. In my case i fed till he decided he was hungry enough to eat.

Cool. I was just worried that it might upset her stomach like it does in certain dogs when you switch up their food.

Wow, people are just trippin out too much...I dont think there's too wrong a thing that anyone can do to and for their fishes.

I actually feed many different kinds of foods different days. This makes them happier, and like us, we wouldnt want to eat the same thing everyday.

Who's trippin? it was just a question about food transitions. Dogs don't take to changing foods too well and I think that's what the op was referring to.

This is actually a very good question, and when changing a fishes diet from one feed to another I always recommend to feed very lightly for the first several days which will allow the fishes digestive system to adjust to the new food, just as one would when changing a dogs diet.

No trippin here .......

I'm not "trippin", although it would be nice to get some psiliocy...nevermind. :) My fish has been getting a certain brand of pellet food for several years along with other foods such as worms, peas, insects, etc. I just want to make sure that the transition goes smoothly to a new and perhaps better staple food. I know from working with dogs for many years that a switch in food can and usually does upset their stomachs.

I leave the brand names out because I do not want to create another brand vs. brand argument.

And while I may be a bit over protective of all my animals my Jack Dempsey holds a special place for me. My parents got me an aquarium eleven years ago and my Dad picked the fish to go into it. The Jack Dempsey has survived all my new fish keeping mistakes and is still around today. However, thanks to cancer my Dad isn't still around today, which makes the fish that much more sentimental to me. Therefore, I want to make sure that I use every resource I can to ensure the fish's continued good health.

Lol, sorry guys, with just words, there are no "stress" or "emotion" behind text...Just simply saying "Dont trip" softly and typing "Dont trip" are 2 different things. Thats why sometimes texting or typing could be bad or go wrong. Especially if you are talking to the opposite sex, sometimes the text is taken in the wrong way.

Just means, "People are just worrying too much about what to feed fishes."
