Hi, I am setting up a frontosa growout tank, I would like to mix 10x 1" frontosa fry that I recently purchased with a 3" and a 4" frontosa that I have had for a while. This a 55 gallon growout tank that I hope would serve me for a while as I weed out some of the males. I am worried that the bigger ones would bully the fry and kill them. Can I mix these or should I put the bigger ones in a seperate tank?

If your worried about them bullying or killing the fry, then I would err on the side of caution and separate the bigger ones until the fry get a little bigger. To me the big ones seem like they could easily hurt or kill the small fry, I personally wouldnt mix them yet.

JMO.

Good luck !

When I was breeding frontosa, I left the fry in with the adults. There were plenty of hiding places in the tank for the fry (rocks and driftwood). The adults didn't really bother the fry. Just my experience.

I don't have experience with frontosa, but I have experienced the same thing with mbuna as joe jaskot described. The other piece that may also play a role is how much you feed. You obviously don't want to overfeed, but if you feed them enough to where they are not constantly hungry then they won't as readily chase and eat smaller babies. This had a big effect on whether my mbuna babies survived or not.

mixing 1 inch fry larger fish is not a good idea. They may not eat them, but they will pick on them. Also remember that there are no parents in the tank to guard these fish and often when you leave fry in with community tank some of them die. Since you paid for these fish you might not want mix them until the fry are larger.
