So I got a 120gal for free because it has a broken bottom pane. We got all the pieces pulled apart and I started to price a new piece of glass for it and started wondering if I could mix and match to save some money. Would it be possible to replace the bottom piece with acrylic instead of glass? Has any one ever done this before?

There would be issues when sealing the portions together. Acrylic and glass both require different types of adhesives to correctly bond them. Glass is held together with silicone, but acrylic is bonded with cement. I would worry about being able to properly seal the whole thing.

As sugested above, glass sealants (silicone) do not work on acrylic/plastic and acrylic/plastic adhesives (liquid acrylic/plastic cement) does not work on glass...

You would be far better off using sealed wood as opposed to acrylic/plastic if you did not wish to use glass...

We'll just go with the glass then. Thanks, I thought it was worth asking. Sorry if it was a dumb question

No dumb questions. It's how we learn.

How is it "broken" ??
Depending on the crack / break, location, and stand you may be able to just patch it ?!?!

Its much cheaper, and often just as strong.
Have you ever repaired/resealed tanks ??

Oh it was bad trust me. When we are finished I'm going to post pics of the whole process. I didn't want to put pics up earlier becuase I know its going to take me a long time to finish.
It had a huge crack then they patched it with silicone and put a new piece of glass over it which wasn't quite big enough and then put globs of silicone over the gap. It was a really ugly patch job thats old and I don't trust it at all. Plus the sides needed to be resiliconed too. It looked like they tried to reseal the whole tank too and did a bad job. So we just figured it would be safer to rip out all the old stuff and start over.
