This weekend before my tank was ready to setup, I went ahead and got some salt mixing. The biggest container i mix it in is like 45 gallons. I dropped two 50 gallon size Instant Ocean bags in it and put two powerheads to help dissolve. I set the tank up the next day and transferred the salt water over and fill it on up with water. Now i know it takes a little bit to dissolve salt but should it still be milky white this long after mixing? Did i mess up and have it too concentrated for too long? 100 gallons worth of salt in a 45 gallon container.

In my 75G I always had the "milky" appearance but my water parameters had always been excellent.
I attribute this to poor polishing filter media. I just set up a SW 20L tank and it is currently cycling, it is "milky" as we speak (I am looking at it!) but I am going to start the "polishing" once the tank is cycled and prior to adding any life.
The long and short, I think it is a mech. filtration thing.

Ah it should clear up soon. Instand Ocean is a salt i stay away from. That crap takes forever to dissolve. It also gets that MILKY solid white. Coralife salt mix is cheaper and better. I have used many different salts and cant beat this one. 150 gallon mix for 30 dollars. I bet you spent more than that on the two 50 gallon mixes. I also try to never mix more salt in the water than i have to. It does take longer. Whats your salinity at?
I would use coralife salt.... mixes faster , cheaper , and pre buffered calcium and everything to promote a healthy tank and help your live rock grow coraline algae. I actually just mixed a tank tonight with coralife salt. 46 gallon , took 30 mins to completely clear.
I use 5 gallon buckets and add the salt that way. I mix the salt and luke warm with my hand in a whorl pool motion. I then use a hydrometer to see where my level of salinity is at. I keep adding salt and mix until the hydromiter reads where it should. I am sorry but after all the water changes I have done I should have known an exact measure ment for the 5 gallon to salt ratio, but always just did the hand and test method cause it was fast. I also add a cap full of stress coat to the water. There you have it instant salt water. Hope this helps.
you put 2 50 gallon bags of salt in a 45 gallon tank and your water is cloudy what is your Salinity it should be through the roof most bags of 50 gallon mix make a salinity of 1.023 and if you add 2 to 45 gallons it has too be extremely high.

.Haha you just caused yourself a little wait and spent extra dollar on a slow mixing salt. Its still a really good salt , just doesn't make sense not to buy coralife.
The purple bag got me a couple times before i couldnt stand that heavy white and slow mixing.
